Kenya Prisons out to defend African title
Four times African Volleyball champions Kenya Prisons target a 5th African title as they head out to Antananarivo in Madagascar for this year’s edition of the competition that kicks off on Tuesday.
The team left Nairobi early on Sunday morning (8:45am) confident of retaining their title for the third year in a row. Prison has won the last three editions and experienced international attacker Braxcides Agala believes they have the quality that will sail them through to the world cup in Brazil.
Agala while speaking to michezoafrika.com at the airport shortly before departure said the team has gained immense experience in their last three participation at the world stage and this will come in handy.
“It has been a long journey and we thank God for the success this far. They say fine wine matures with age and for us each year we learn something new from our adventures. I love seeing my team mates helping each other to growth. We believe in ourselves and we will continue playing as a family because that is the secret weapon we posses.” Agala says.
At the end of last year, Prisons dethroned Kenya Pipeline to win the domestic title.
The team has represented Africa in the last three editions of the world championships held in Doha in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Libero Elizabeth Nafula said, “it will definitely not be easy. Everyone has trained hard especially with their eyes on the defending champions. We are expect tight competition from Egyptian, Cameronian clubs and of course our counterparts Pipeline. But we believe in ourselves, we want to be in Brazil.”
Deputy coach Josp Baraza said they have had good training since January with no injuries reported. The team has been training at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani since January.
The Prisons men’s team is also preparing for the men edition of the same competition that will be held in Libya starting 17th of April.
