Egyptian Samir wins African Junior Tennis

World number 37 Sandra Samir  of Egypt is the winner of the 2013 edition Africa Junior Championship girls under 16 that ended Saturday afternoon at  the Nairobi club court.

The Egyptian  who is seeded first in the continent needed  to overcome  Namibian Lesedi Jacobs  in the pulsating  final played at the Nairobi club with a 6-2, 6-0 sets.

Kenyans fans rallied behind the winner against the Namibian who eliminated the Kenya rising star Stephanie Mbaya in the quarter finals on Thursday.

Majed Kilani of Tunisia won the boys U16 title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over tournament’s fifth seed Mohamed Dougaz from Mauritius. Kilani is seeded second and was a clear favorite to win the ticket to the Davis Junior.

This was an historic event held in Kenya for the first time since its inception over 36 years ago.

 Kenya Lawn Tennis Association KLTA chairlady Puurvi Pawal said it was such an honor to host the biggest junior event in the country.

“We have learned a lot from the visitors over the last two weeks. This was an opportunity for our players to grow and learn. We are humbled as a federation.” she said.
