Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has revealed that his administration has set aside 800 million shillings for the renovation of the City Stadium which will later be renamed the Joe Kadenge Stadium.
The facility has been lying in ruins for years despite the endless promises by the previous administration to breathe life into it.
Previous Governors, Evans Kidero, Michael Sonko, and Ann Kananu promised to facelift the stadium but exited office without doing much.
Sakaja who was present during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Talanta City Stadium revealed that his administration had set aside the colossal amount for the renovation of the facility that serves as home ground for record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia.
The county boss however admitted that the amount was not sufficient and hence appealed to the national government to boost their kitty with another 800 million.
“We have set a budget of Ksh 800 million to ensure we complete the projects and have also asked the Sports Fund boss to add a similar amount or 1 billion to construct the stadium together and we know if we get a boost we are going to construct something appealing,’ said the former AFC Leopards Patron.
The former Nairobi Senator further said a Joe Kadenge statute will be erected at the facility after completion in honour of the fallen legend.
Meanwhile, Sakaja hinted that the Dandora Stadium is likely to be launched during the Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom festivals in April.
“As a county government, we have made a lot of progress. We have completed the Dandora Stadium which had stalled in the previous regime. We are going to launch it with Safaricom during the Chapa Dimba festival in April,” he said.
