Kenya Rugby Union Chairman, Mwangi Muthee has spoke highly of five rugby academies that the Union has started and which are intended to develop the sport at a younger age.

The academies are set up at Kakamega Boys in western Province, Upper Hill high school in Nairobi, Shimo La Tewa High school in Mombasa, Maseno School in Nyanza and Menengai High in Rift valley.

Muthee believes if this institutions of learning are fully equipped, then the continuous supply of raw talent in quality players will be assured in a country that is regarded as one of the best rugby nations in the world.

“If we are to maintain our core status as one of the best rugby nations then there is need to do a lot of investments in rugby. The above mentioned institutions have shown effort in producing rugby players. We therefore take it as a union to support in all areas possible to come up with quality players.” He said.

Muthee gave an example of the HSBC Sevens World Series where he said Kenya needs depth in squad without overworking players.

“The whole essence of the academies is to ensure there is continuity of players through generations while also performing well. That will therefore mean we do not have to overwork certain players.” he said.

According to Muthee, for a start, the Union will ensure that rugby equipment is availed in the academies and will also send trainers who will be monitoring the progress.

Muthee was speaking when he witnessed the unveiling of a partnership between French Embassy in Kenya and the Sadili Oval that have joined hands to support the development of Sadili rugby training academy in Lang’ata region.
