Tusker crowned 2012 Super Cup champions
2011 KPL champions Tusker FC on Sunday bagged their first title of the season after being crowned the 2012 DSTV.SuperSport Super Cup champions following their 4-1 penalty shoot out triumph over FKL Cup champions Gor Mahia. The match had ended 1-1 in regulation time with both goals of the match being scored in the first half.
Gor Mahia started and remained dominant throughout the first quarter of the first half winning all midfield balls with Rama Salim, Collins Okoth and Ali Abondo dictating the tempo in the central pack. Ali Abondo’s free kick from the edge of the box in the 11th minute haunted his former team Tusker as he curled in perfectly beyond Samuel Odhiambo for Kogalo’s opening goal.
Brian Mandela would later poke in a loose ball for the equalizer in the 27th minute from a goal mouth scramble as both teams headed to the break on a 1-1 score line.
Gor pushed hard in the second period with numerous attempts on goal but Tusker custodian Samuel Odhiambo a.k.a ‘Abawa’ was in top form to deny the crowd pullers the winner from fantastic stops.
The match had to be decided on post match penalties and Tusker emerged victorious after a 4-1 win with goals from Joackins Atudo, Joseph Mbugi, Isaac Otieno and Brian Mandela. Gor Mahia’s only penalty was scored by Rama Salim. Moses Odhiambo and Donald Mosoti had their penalties blocked by Samuel Odhiambo who was later declared man of the match.
For the win, Tusker took home the day’s Super Cup that was accompanied with a 750,000 shillings cash prize.Gor Mahia received half a million as runners up award.
