City Stars' David Gateri secures deal in South Africa
Nairobi City Stars youngster David Gateri departed Nairobi for South Africa on Friday night to join the Cape United Soccer School of excellence in Cape Town South Africa where he attended and passed trials in September 2010.Gateri could not be taken in immediately as he had to come back for his fourth form exams.
Speaking to michezoafrika.com before departure, an excited Gateri is convinced he will be able to uplift his career with brighter chances of achieving passage to an international professional career in Europe.
“Am so excited for this opportunity and am determined to attain great heights in my career. I will focus on creating a good name for other Kenyans with an ambition of passing through the same club because I target higher leagues in Europe soon.” He said moments before departure.
Cape United is one of the world’s finest independent Soccer Schools and focuses on exposing Africa’s talent to the world with majority of its players being recruited in leading European clubs and of course plays as a major feed to the South African premier league.
Gateri’s coach Ken Odhiambo has wished him well in his pursuit of excellence in South Africa “He has the potential to become a leading star in the near future. We wish him all the best and we are confident he will represent City Stars and Kenya positively through his talent and discipline.” He said.
Gateri grew up and honed his career at the Kawangware based Vapor FC before joining world hope in early 2008 which later transformed to be called Nairobi City stars.
In 2009, he was in the Langata high school team that won the prestigious National secondary schools’ title. In last year’s (2009) KPL awards, Gateri emerged third best in the category of most promising player.
